8 runs needed in 87 balls
Two fours in Lasith Malinga’s over and South Africa just need 8 more to win. Faf on 92 – can he get to a hundred?
The last rites being written
South Africa need 26 runs to win with 9 wickets in hand. Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis are cruising at the moment. A real perfect performance from Proteas.
Amla saved by DRS
Hashim Amla has been trapped by Jeevan Mendis. The umpire gives it out. Amla took the review, but he was walking back. But the replays showed it was pitched outside leg.
FIFTY!
Skipper Faf du Plessis brings up his half century in 70 balls. South Africa are 137/1 in 27.1 overs. This is getting easy for Proteas.
South Africa cruising
Malinga manages to bowl a maiden over. But Sri Lanka need wickets. At this moment, South Africa are cruising with 78 runs to win in 28 overs.
FIFTY!
Hashim Amla brings up his half century – in 56 balls. This would have boost his confidence for the rest of the tour if Proteas had survived. SA 106/1 in 19.1 overs
100 runs up
South Africa have reached the 100-run mark in the 19th over. Faf du Plessis and Hashim Amla are cruising in this chase.
Lakmal expensive
Suranga Lakmal has been pretty expensive in the match so far. Faf du Plessis pulls one short ball to midwicket for four. Good over for Proteas – 12 runs more to win.
15 overs gone
This has been a good partnership building between Faf du Plessis and Hashim Amla. The duo have ensured the pressure is back on Sri Lanka with a low total to chase. 15 overs gone, SA 75/1
Jeevan Mendis into attack
Jeevan Mendis is into the attack. He did not enjoy a nice time in the previous match, only got three overs. But can he do wonders here?
Amla looking to target Perera
Amla is looking to target Thisara Perera. Tries to flex his muscles and get runs on the board. But failed to get a boundary in the over. 12 overs gone, SA 62/1.
10 overs gone
A little bit of width and Amla slashed it hard towards mid-off for four. Another one from Faf du Plessis to end the over. 10 overs gone, South Africa are 53/1.
Runds dried up
The difference a wicket can make in a match is clearly visible. The runs have dried up and Amla who was looking confident and energetic before, is now looking sloppy.
Cleaned up!
Lasith Malinga has cleaned up Quinton de Kock with a spectacular yorker. De Kock departs for 15. SA 31/1.
Glorious shot
Quinton de Kock glides it for a boundary – pitched full and outside off stump and the ball goes to the boundary ropes. Good start for Proteas.
Malinga under pressure
Pitched up from Lasith Malinga, and Quinton de Kock glides it for a straight boundary. The pressure is now on the bowler, being hit fir three boundaries already.
Malinga punished in one over
Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla out to bat to start the chase. Lasith Malinga starts the attack with the new ball. Malinga punished in the first over, with Amla driving two boundaries. 1 over gone, Sri Lanka 8/0.
Pretorious speaks
“It was the type of wicket where you just had to be disciplined. I think the partnerships worked well today and that was the best performance of the tournament so far. It’s just basic, basic cricket. Hit the top of off. The wicket looks slightly slow, big outfield. So I think good cricket shots for us and running hard is going to be the key.”
SL 203 all out
Lasith Malinga got a boundary off Chris Morris to take their score past 200 but the happiness did not last long as he miscued the shot completely and was caught by Faf Du Plessis. SL 203 all out.
Udana departs
Second wicket for Kagiso Rabada as he dismisses Isuru Udana for 17. A wild shot from the tail-ender and Rabada was able to complete the catch off his own bowling. Sri Lanka 197/9
Bee Invasion
A swarm of bees has invaded the ground and all the players and officials are on the ground. Chris Morris used the time to get some exercise but now, they are up. Play resumes and Sri Lanka are 195/8
Too little too late
47 overs gone. Sri Lanka are 192 for the loss of eight wickets. Some intent shown by Isuru Udana and Suranga Lakmal but this feels like too little too late for the Lankans.
Phehlukwayo strikes
A good catch by Kagiso Rabada in the deep as Andile Phehlukwayo took the wicket of Thisara Perera. He went for the big shot but ended up giving a catch to Rabada. 45.3 overs gone – SL are 184/8.
Scarcity of runs
44 overs gone. Sri Lanka are 179 for the loss of seven wickets. Just 16 runs came in the last four overs and this is not helping matters for Sri Lanka. They never looked convincing after the initial loss of wickets and with South Africa bowlers bowling with intent, 200 looks like a tough target for them.
Stat Attack: Mendis
Jeevan Mendis dismissed for 18 (46)
This is the most balls faced by him in an ODI innings since (4 Aug 2012)
In that match he scored 72 (88 balls) vs India
This is now the lowest SR knock of this WC (min. 40 balls faced)
Mendis out
Chris Morris gets his second wicket as Jeevan Mendis is caught at fine leg by Dwayne Pretorius. A clear top edge and the ball ballooned off his bat. Pretorious made no mistake in completing the catch and Sri Lanka seven wickets down for 163.
Expensive over from Duminy
Duminy concedes 14 runs in his over and it came against the run of play. There was a boundary from Jeevan Mendis while five runs he conceded through wides. South Africa will have to stop these runs in order to keep the score to a low one.
Stat Attack: Dhananjaya
Dhananjaya de Silva dismissed by Duminy for 24 (41)
Back to back score of 20s for de Silva
Only the 2nd time in ODIs has he been out bowled.
The last time he got bowled in ODIs was also against a South African spinner (Imran Tahir was the player back then)
Duminy strikes
JP Duminy strikes with the very first ball of the spell and Dhananjaya De Silva is dismissed for 24. A straight delivery and De Silva made a complete mess of it. The batsman went for the reverse sweep but missed the ball completely and it crashed into the middle stump. SL 136/6
Looking for a strong finish
Till now, Sri Lanka have not looked like a solid batting unit in this game but they will need to get their act together with 14 overs to go. Kagiso Rabada has already bowled two maiden overs and after 36 overs, South Africa are five wickets down for 135.
Sluggish batting
34 overs gone. Sri Lanka are 128/5. This is not going well for the Islanders at all as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and not a single partnership lasted for a very long time. They need a good finish if they want to take their score to anywhere in the race of 220 to 250.
Stat Attack: K Mendis
Kusal Mendis departs for 23 (51)
The 2nd time that Chris Morris has dismissed Kusal Mendis in ODIs
Pretorius picks up his 3rd wicket
This is the 4th time that he has picked up a 3-fer in ODIs
The 2nd time against SL in ODIs (to pick up a 3-fer)
Third for Pretorious
Dwaine Pretorius took his third wicket as Kusal Perera is caught for 23. A loose shot from the Sri Lanka batsman and Chris Morris took a tough catch inside the ring as Sri Lanka lost their fifth wicket. SL 111/5
Stat Attack: Mathews
Angelo Mathews departs for 11 (29)
This is his lowest score in his last 5 ODI inns vs SA
He is dismissed out bowled after 10 dismissed ODI innings
The last time hes was bowled in ODIs was vs India (17 Dec 2017)
This is the 2nd time that Sri Lanka has lost their first 4 wickets inside or at 100 runs in this WC.
Mathews out
Dreadful shot from Angelo Mathews as he played the delivery onto his stumps. A needless shot from the veteran and Chris Morris has provided the fourth breakthrough for South Africa. Sri Lanka 100/4
Tahir’s here
Imran Tahir was introduced into the attack but Sri Lanka batsmen were not bothered much by the spinner in his opening over. In the next over. Angelo Mathews read the ball from Chris Morris perfectly and slammed it for the boundary. SL 100/3
Still no Tahir
Still no sign of Imran Tahir as the match heads towards the halfway mark. He has been the top performer for the Proteas with 10 wickets to his name and he can be the deciding factor at this juncture of the game. SL 91/3
Slow but steady
Kusal Mendis 9* (23) and Angelo Mathews 5*(15) are batting quite slowly but that is the ask of the hour. Sri Lanka lost three wickets quite early and right now, the most important thing for them will be a good partnership. After 17 overs, SL are 85/3.
Steady run rate
The run rate has taken a huge damage after the two quick wickets. However, thanks to the good start, Sri Lanka are still 83/3 after 15.3 overs and a good partnership between Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews can steady things for them.
Stat Attack: Kusal Perera
Kusal Perera dismissed for 30 (34)
2nd time out bowled in his last 3 ODI innings.
In his 5 innings this WC, he got out 4 times against a fast bowler.
Double Strike
Dwaine Pretorius strikes once again! A straight delivery from the fast bowler and Kusal Perera edged it onto his stumps. Perera departs for 30 as Sri Lanka are three wickets down for 72.
Stat Attack – Avishka Fernando
Avishka Fernando out for 30 (29)
His scores in his last 5 ODI inns vs SA are as follows:
30 (today), 9, 29, 23, 10
This is the 3rd time (in 5 matches) in this WC that Sri Lanka have lost atleast 2 wickets inside the first 10 overs.
Fernando out
First wicket of the World Cup for Dwaine Pretorius as he dismissed Avishka Fernando for 30. Fernando was looking in good touch but he ended up top edging a seemingly ordinary delivery and Faf Du Plessis completed an easy catch. Sri Lanka 67/2
Loose from Rabada
FOUR! A gentle loosener from Rabada and Fernando helps it on his way through the square-leg boundary. Not great stuff from Rabada.
Delightful from Fernando
FOUR! Wow what a shot from young Fernando, just stand and deliver stuff. Rabada pitches it up, it doesn’t swing , Fernando takes a small stride and drills it straight down the ground for a boundary, poses for the photographers too. Brilliant stuff!
Perera goes aerial
FOUR! Perera written all over that one. A bit risky, a bit uppish but given a chance he will once again play the same short. Fuller length delivery outside off, Perera shows no intentions of keeping it down, doesn’t quite get the desired connection but enough to collect his second boundary.
Cracker from Perera
FOUR! Smashed by Perera. Short and wide from Morris, it was there to hit and Perera doesn’t need a second invitation, he smashes it for his first boundary. 8 runs from Morris’ first over, not a good start from him.
Good start from Fernando
3 runs! Back of a length delivery outside off, Fernando stands tall and steers it through the gap between cover-point and point. The fielder from the former position chases it down. He slips a bit while turning but safely returns the ball in play. Three runs taken and Sri Lanka are underway.
First ball first wicket
OUT! What beauty to start from Rabada. It just took off from a length, Karunaratne tries to fend at it away but only manages to glove it du Plessis. A golden duck for the Sri Lankan captain, a dream start for Rabada and South Africa.

Dimuth speaks
We wanted to bat first, seems like a good track and we feel we can put a good score and defend that. One change for us, Suranga Lakmal comes in for Nuwan Pradeep. We just want to win this match and see how the next two games unfold.
Sri Lanka (Playing XI): Dimuth Karunaratne(c), Kusal Perera(w), Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Thisara Perera, Jeevan Mendis, Isuru Udana, Lasith Malinga, Suranga Lakmal
Faf speaks
e gonna have a bowl Nas. it’s fresh pitch and hoping to get some seam movement, looks a good pitch and doesn’t spin too much in the second innings. Two changes for us. Pretorious and Duminy come in for Ngidi and Miller. We are playing an extra batter today and hopefully that allows our batters to bat more freely. We deserved everything that had come towards us. We have played some good cricket and we have not been consistent enough.
South Africa (Playing XI): Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock(w), Faf du Plessis(c), Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Jean-Paul Duminy, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Chris Morris, Kagiso Rabada, Imran Tahir
TOSS
SA Skipper Faf du Plessis wins toss, and elects to bowl.
Cool fun fact
Sri Lanka and South Africa are the only two teams to have a hat-trick on either sides in a World Cup game. Lasith Malinga in 2007 World Cup against SA. JP Duminy against SL in 2015 World Cup.
Pitch dimension and Report
“The sun is coming out and we got a very big ground here. Ones, twos and threes will be crucial. Looks a good surface and it has always helped seamers historically. Good even covering of grass and the seam on the white kookaburra just grips here, but not a lot. Sri Lanka have some inside information on this pitch. Their batting coach JJ Lewis was a coach here for a long long time and they might stick with their plan have a bat and defend like they did against England.,” reckons Nasser Hussain and Pommie Mbangwa.

What’s the equation for Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka have 2 more matches against West Indies and India apart from today’s match against South Africa. These matches won’t be easy, but they have the possibility of finishing with 12 points if they win all the three matches. However, if they end on 10 points, they will have to sit and wait and hope England lose all their remaining matches, Bangladesh do not win more than two and Pakistan lose at least one.
Who said what
Chandika Hathurusingha, Sri Lanka head coach: Cricket is funny game. You can lose so many games and win the one that is the most important. I think we have enough talent and skill to compete with them.
JP Duminy, South Africa all-rounder: I think the most disappointing part has been our team performance and I think it will be amiss of me not to mention how disappointed we are, particularly letting all our fans down back home
