Dimuth Karunaratne speaks
“Our batters and bowlers did really good work, when you are playing it is slower and slower, we couldn’t get to 300 so wanted 250-275, Angelo batted really well and with some score on the board the bowlers knew what to do. It’s a team effort, when Malinga got a couple of wickets we needed to keep him for the last overs, and Dhanajaya did a really good job.”
Eoin Morgan speaks
“We were at fault with a lack of substantial performances. It wasn’t good enough. It’s frustrating, every game is a one-off game, it’s about fronting up today, and bouncing back on Tuesday. Both sides adapted to conditions, found it challenging on a bowler’s day. There will be those throughout the tournament, so we have to adapt. As a team we come back aggressively. This is a long, long tournament, there are opportunities in every game. Australia, it’s a fixture you look for first on the fixture list.”
Malinga – Man of the match
“We know how good Stokes is, we know how hard he hits, but we stick to our basics, and kept bowling our stock balls, and ended up winning. We stick to our plan, line and length, variation of slower ball and bouncer. We have good confidence as we know how good the England team is.”
GONE
Mark Wood has edged it to the keeper and England are all out for 212. Sri Lanka win by 20 runs and what a thrilling finish it was. Ben Stokes remained unbeaten on 82.
Stokes gets away
Ben Stokes has slashed it hard for a boundary. He then muscled for another boundary. Pressure mounting on Sri Lankan bowlers now.
Back to back sixes
Ben Stokes has hit two back to back sixes in Isuru Udana’s over. Brings up 200 for Sri Lanka. Ben Stokes is on the charge.
Almost!
Ben stokes hit it to midwicket and the fielder almost caught that one – but it just dipped at the right moment. Malinga bowls out with 4/43 in 10 overs. England need 45 to win in 30 balls
GONE
Jofra Archer has hammered it straigh to the keeper at long-on. Isuru Udana’s slow ball does the trick. Archer grew impatient and paid the price. Sri Lanka are nearly there – ENG 186/9
Edged and caught – twice
Chris Woakes has edged one to the keeper and Sri Lanka have got another one. Dhananjaya de Silva gets another wicket. England 176/7 in 40.1 overs
Adil Rashid is dismissed in a similar fashion and England are now eight wickets down. De Silva gets his third wicket.
FIFTY!
Ben Stokes makes a late cut and brings up his half century in 61 balls. England are 176/6 in 39.2 overs. Good shot this and it would release some of the pressure.
CAUGHT!
Moeen Ali has gone for another six and he has been caught in the deep by Isuru Udana. Wasteful shot. ENG 170/6 in 38.3 overs.
SIX!
Moeen Ali goes big! Hits a slog sweep towards midwicket for a six. There was a fielder there, but he could not get there. Pressure on de Silva.
Ben Stokes leading charge
Ben Stokes is leading the chase at the moment and he would be the crucial wicket here. The longer he stays on, the more pressure will fall on Sri Lankan bowlers.
Buttler OUT!
Lasith Malinga traps Jos Buttler – huge appeal and the fingers goes up. Buttler called for a review. Is it missing leg stump? Nope – it is hitting. SL 144/5 in 32.3 overs.
Buttler did it!
FOUR! Jos Buttler smashes Lasith Malinga for a four. A short one and the batsman pulled it towards fine leg for a boundary.
ROOT GONE!
Joe Root has nicked one back to the keeper and Lasith Malinga gets his third wicket. Sri Lanka reviewed this and received the price. ENG 127/4
30 overs gone
Joe root and Ben Stokes have already stitched a 50-run partnership and England are now cruising here. Sri Lanka need wickets. ENG 126/3 in 30 overs
Stokes on fire
Ben Stokes has hit two straight sixes in Jeevan Mendis’ over. England are in control now and if Stokes continues like this, this can get over pretty soon. 14 runs in the over. ENG 117/3 in 28 overs.
Root fifty
Joe Root brings up his half century. It’s his fifth half century in this World Cup. Brilliant batting this and he is the mood to chase this down on his own. Needs someone to just stick it out in the middle.
25 overs bowled
Stokes has played 22 deliveries so far and he has scored just 7 runs. Root has hit 47 runs but he has faced 74 deliveries. Although England’s required rate is under 6 at the moment, if this kind of batting keeps on going, the rate will jump higher in no time.
Runs hard to come by
Ben Stokes and Joe Root are sticking with singles and doubles and they are not trying to take any risk at the moment. Dhananjaya de Silva and Isuru Udana are bowling tight line and length to keep the scoring the rate down.
England need a partnership
Today is the day when England’s middle-order will be tested. They are under the pump for the first time in the tournament as for once, it the top-order hasn’t come to the party. Joe Root has held the innings from one end and he needs someone to stay with him in the middle.
20 overs gone
Joe Root is leading the chase at the moment. England are just 76/3 in 20 overs and the pressure is back on the hosts with Eoin Morgan back in the hut. Ben Stokes on the other end.
CAUGHT!
Eoin Morgan has hit it straight back to Isuru Udana on his own bowling. Flush off the middle and Udana has grabbed it in the air – reflex catch. ENG 73/3
Root finds a boundary
FOUR! Joe Root slams Udana for a boundary. Eoin Morgan had hit another one in the same over. England are on the move. ENG 68/2 after 17 overs.
50 for England
England have taken 14 overs to bring up their 50. Good fielding from Sri Lanka fielders at the moment and England are bounded in shackles.
Root vs Malinga
Root wins! Straight down the ground on a fuller one and that races to the boundary. Glorious shot, using the pace of the ball, just punching it lightly. ENG 35/2 in 9 overs
Edged and caught
Comeback from Malinga. Away swing at good length. Gets an edge from Vince and the fielder in slip has caught it easily. Mendis has safe pair of hands. ENG 26/2
Lovely shot
James Vince finally middles the ball – and it has been punched straight down the ground for a boundary. This races to the ropes. Follows it up with another boundary on a half-volley towards midwicket for a boundary.
Welcome boundary
Joe Root has slashed one off for a boundary towards mid-off to get runs on the board. England are 10/1 in the 4th over. Pressure was building and this wil relieve some pressure.
Bairstow is gone for duck
Jonny Bairstow has been trapped on the pads by Malinga – it is a slower one. The umpire gives it as a go. Bairstow reviews. Is it missing leg stump? It has gone to Umpire’s call and so, Bairstow has to walk back for a duck. Disappointment for the local crowd. ENG 1/1
Chase begins
James Vince and Jonny Bairstow out in the middle to open the innings. Lasith Malinga is into the attack for Sri Lanka.
Wood speaks
Wood: “We started brilliantly I thought. Obviously to get two wickets early was really good and we finished really well too. The spinners also bowled really well in the middle overs. We kept having a squeeze on them and never let them get off the hook. A team performance overall. I think I am in the form of my career and I need to keep this going I guess. The pitch seem to be gripping a bit, the spinners said the same and so we used a lot of slower balls and cutters. Angelo played really well but we did well to contain them. I hope so (that England can chase this), I hope I am not needed because that means we’ll be in trouble.”
End of innings
Jofra Archer gives away 8 runs in his final over. Sri Lanka finish at 232/9 in 50 overs. England need 233 to win. Mathews 85* remains the top scorer.
CLEANED UP!
Mark Wood has cleaned up Lasith Malinga. Perfect yorker to Slinga Malinga. SL 220/9 in 48.3 overs.
CAUGHT!
Isuru Udana has hit it straight into the air and it falls straight into the hands of Joe Root. Mark Wood gets another wicket. SL 209/8
Perera depart
Jofra Archer gets his third wicket with Thisara Perera pulling one straight to fine leg. Adil Rashid takes a good low catch. Sri Lanka 200/7 in 45.4 overs
Good catch
De Silva tried to launch it over the covers and he is caught at short mid-on with a fantastic catch from skipper Joe Root. Jofra Archer gets a wicket. SL 190/6
FIFTY!
Angelo Mathews brings up his half century with a boundary. He reaches the landmark in 53 balls. He is the sole fighting spirit for Sri Lanka.
Rashid is done
Adil Rashid finished his spell of 10 overs with figures of 2/45. Fantastic effort from the spinner. 40 overs gone, SL 172/5
Moeen Ali done
Moeen Ali completes his spell of 10 overs with just 40 runs coming in his overs. He did not take any wickets, but he kept the shackles on.
150 up for Sri Lanka
FOUR! A welcome boundary from De Silva and a much-needed one. Sri Lanka need to break out of these shackles. 150 up for Sri Lanka.32 overs gone, SL 152/5
Pressure building
Spinners are building the pressure on Sri Lanka. They are quickly getting away with their overs, and not allowing any room for the batsmen to get runs on the board. Pressure mounting.
OUT!
Kusal Mendis cannot believe it. He has pulled it towards short midwicket and Eoin Morgan takes a reflex diving catch. Mendis departs for 46. Sri Lanka 133/4.
Jeevan Mendis has hit it straight back to Adil Rashid on the next ball. Sri Lanka 133/5. Rashid on a hat-trick.
Partnership building
A partnership is building between Angelo Mathews and Kusal Mendis and Sri Lanka have crossed the 100-run mark in the 24th over. Sri Lanka would want these two to stay for long in the middle.
Classy from Mendis
FOUR! Good stride, high elbow, bat face turning just as the ball strikes it – Everything right about that cover drive from Kusal Mendis. He looks a class apart when he gets it right.
Wood in the middle of a good spell
Mark wood is bowling well. Looks like he has found the perfect length on this track. Mathews and Mendis need to be careful here.
Fernando falls one short of a fifty
OUT! Fernando falls agonizingly short of a well-deserved half-century. What a shame, he thoroughly deserved that fifty and much more. A short and wide delivery from Wood, Fernando tries to guide it with an open-faced bat but ends up hitting it straight to the third man fielder. England needed that one. But what a lovely little innings from Fernando.
50 partnership
Edged and four! Fifty partnership between Fernando and Mendis and Mendis has scored only 6 of those. It has been Fernando all the way. He has neutralized the affect of those two early wickets.
Fernando takes apart Archer
We never thought we would have to write this but Archer is being thrashed to all parts of the ground by Avishka Fernando. If he pitches it short, Fernando pulls him, if he pitches it up Fernando gets onto the front foot and drives him. Archer has no way to go, another six and a four comes in this over, a conference going on in the middle.
Fernando in fine form
Fernando is looking like million dollars at the moment. Another fantastic shot from the youngster. Woakes pitches it around middle, Fernando leans forward and just strokes it straight back past the bowler to collect another four.
Jofra Archer who?
SIX! Four! Forget Archer, get your eyes on Avishka Fernando. Boy he looks a talent. A 145 km/h bouncer from Archer was dispatched deep into stands followed by a confident drive off the front throught he vacant cover area . Where was this guy all this while?
Cracker from Fernando
FOUR! What a shot that was from Avishka Fernando. That came out of nowhere. Short and wide from Archer and Fernando latches onto it in a flash, no chance for the fielders as it races away for the first boundary of the match.
Maiden from Archer
Brilliant stuff from Archer. He is getting it to move both ways at a rapid pace. The young middle order of Sri Lanka have their task cut out.
Woakes gets into the act
OUT! Terrible shot from Kusal Perera but that’s the way he plays. Width on offer, he goes hard at it only to get a thickish outside edge which flies to third man. Moeen Ali makes no mistake. Sri Lanka in real trouble after opting to bat first.
Archer strikes
Edged and gone! Jofra Archer the man for England. What a delivery, just kicks off length and kisses Karunaratne’s bat , Buttler does the rest. Sri Lanka pinned early.
Woakes on the money
Chris Woakes starts the proceedings like Chris Woakes, perfect lines, perfect lengths, not that much movement but enough to keep the batsman honest. Sri Lanka 2 for no loss after the first over.
All set
Chris Woakes has the new ball and he will be up against Dimuth Karunaratne. Here we go!
