Azhar Mahmood did not want to read too much into the drubbing against West Indies and now wants his own bowlers to be aggressive and try out the short-pitched stuff against England.
Match Summary
Pakistan beat World Cup favourites England by 14 runs despite centuries for Joe Root and Jos Buttler at Trent Bridge on Monday.
Having scored 348 for eight in their 50 overs thanks to 84 from Mohammad Hafeez and Babar Azam’s 63, Pakistan held off the England charge with a late flurry of wickets to leave them 334-9.
Root scored 107 and Buttler made 103, but that was not enough to stop hosts England suffering a first defeat in their second match of the tournament as Pakistan bounced back from a thrashing against the West Indies.

Pakistan victorious
Pakistan have done it! Amazing bowling performance at the death by Mohammad Amir and Wahaz Riaz as they have defeated England by 14 runs to register their first win of ICC World Cup 2019!
Pakistan on top
Chris Woakes was dismissed on the very next ball by Wahab Riaz and now, England need 29 runs to win off the last two overs. Advantage Pakistan!
Moeen departs
A six for Chris Woakes but the Wahab Riaz over did not end well for England as Moeen Ali was dismissed off the penultimate delivery. Moeen misread the ball completely and was caught by Fakhar Zaman. ENG 320/7
38 need off 3 overs
2, 2, 4, 0, Wd, Wd, 1L, 4 – A good over for England as 15 runs came off it and England now need 38 runs to win from the last three overs. ENG 311/6
Stat Attack: Two tons
It was only be the 13th instance where 2 centuries have been scored in an innings against Pakistan.
This was be the 2nd time two English batsmen have scored a century against Pakistan in an ODI innings.
The last time was in 2015/16 at Dubai.
Jason Roy and Jos Buttler scored centuries in that match.
Century and out!
Jos Buttler reached his century but was dismissed on the very next delivery by Mohammed Amir. This is getting really close. However, it was a brilliant knock by Buttler as he slammed his hundred in just 75 balls.
It was only the 5th instance where 2 centuries have been scored on the same day:
7th June 1975 – Glenn Turner/ Dennis Amiss
22nd Feb 1992 – David Boon/ Martin Crowe
23rd May 1999 – Rahul Dravid/Sachin Tendulkar
19th February 2011 – Virender Sehwag/ Virat Kohli
3rd June 2019 – Joe Root /Jos Buttler
Pakistan’s mistake
England’s Joe Root scored the first hundred of the 2019 World Cup when he reached three figures against Pakistan in a group game at Trent Bridge on Monday.
Root completed his 15th one-day international century in 97 balls, including nine fours and a six, with a quick single off Wahab Riaz.
But it would have been a different story had he not been dropped on nine by diving slip Babar Azam off left-arm fast bowler Riaz.
10 overs left
91 runs needed off 60 balls – The match is truly going down to the wire but Jos Buttler out in the middle, England will surely be quite confident of their chances. Buttler has played quite sensibly till now and with Moeen Ali and Jofra Archer still remaining, he has enough support. ENG 259/5
Root departs
Massive wicket! Shadab Khan strikes once again as Joe Root departs for 107, England 248/5. A quicker one from the young spinner but Root ended up slashing it straight to Mohammad Hafeez at short third man. ENG 248/5
Hundred for Root
Joe Root’s century:
15th ODI ton
1st against PAK
2nd in World Cup
1st Englishman to score a century against Pakistan in WC
Interesting fact:
The team that has registered the first century in last 3 World Cups, have gone to win the tournament:
2007: Ponting scored the tournament’s first century against Scotland
2011: Sehwag scored the tournament’s first century against Bangladesh
2015: Finch scored the tournament’s first century against England
Ravishing Root
Joe Root now has the highest individual score by an Englishman against Pakistan in WC.
97* – Joe Root, today
86 – Bill Athey in 1987 at Karachi
78* – G Fowler in 1983 at Lord’s
75 – Robin Smith in 1996 at Karachi
69 – G Fowler in 1983 at Manchester.
Buttler masterclass
This has been an absolute masterclass by Jos Buttler till now. He has batted sensibly but has also punished the ball deliveries. As a result, the run rate has been quite consistent and Joe Root was not forced to take any unnecessary risks on the other end. ENG 208/4
Fifty for Buttler
Jos Buttler’s fifty:
19th ODI fifty
4th fifty+ score vs PAK
A frustrating over for Wahab Riaz! Jos Buttler edged the first ball but in the absence of any slip fielder, it raced to the boundary. Same thing happened two balls later but this time, the ball fell short of the fielder. Jos Buttler and Joe Root are playing brilliantly as England are 187/4.
Buttler in control
England are averaging one boundary every over and that is not good news for Pakistan. With spin on both ends, they are trying to make Jos Buttler nervous but he is batting on 33 off 24 balls while Joe Root is looking as confident as ever on the other end. England 175/4
Buttler, Root steady
Jos Buttler and Joe Root have made their intentions clear and thanks to their hitting, England are ahead of Pakistan when it comes to runs scored at the end of the 26th over. Joe Root is playing sensibly while Jos Buttler has already scored 28 off just 19 balls. ENG 162/4
Stat Attack: Joe Root
Joe Root’s fifty:
32nd ODI fifty
7th vs PAK
3rd consecutive fifty in ODIs
3rd fifty+ score in WC.
Stokes departs
Ben Stokes went for the cut but ending up edging the ball to Sarfaraz Ahmed behind the stumps. A sharp catch by the Pakistan skipper as England are 120/4
Fifty for Joe Root
Joe Root scores his 32nd ODI fifty as England are 111/3. This has been a mature knock from Root and he will have to turn this into a big one but England want to achieve this target.
Stat Attack: Mohammad Hafeez
Mohammad Hafeez picks up his first wicket against England after 7 innings.
His last wicket was in 2010 at Southampton.
Hafeez strikes
Massive wicket for Pakistan! Mohammad Hafeez castles Eoin Morgan, England 86/3. A straighter one from Hafeez and Eoin Morgan made a complete mess of it. Went for the cut but missed the ball and it crashed straight into the middle stump.
Root on a roll
Mohammad Hafeez into the attack and he is greeted by Joe Root with a cheeky boundary. Just moments ago,the team physio was checking Root as something went into his eye but it does not seem to be bothering him much as he is looking in quite a good touch. ENG 78/2
Chris Woakes
Chris Woakes became the first England cricketer to take four catches in a World Cup encounter when he achieved the feat against Pakistan. Read full story here.
History Lesson
The highest total made by any team batting second to win a World Cup match is Ireland’s 329 for seven against England in Bangalore in 2011. Pakistan, however, failed to defend a score of 340 against England — the world’s top-ranked ODI side — at Trent Bridge last month.
Bairstow out
Wahab Riaz strikes for Pakistan as Jonny Bairstow is caught behind for 32, England 60/2. Riaz bowled it just outside off stump and Bairstow ended up edging it to the wicket-keeper as England lose their second wicket.
Dealing in boundaries
Wahab Riaz is introduced into the attack and the start has been less than satisfactory. Jonny Bairstow slammed him for a boundary through mid wicket and then an inside edge rushed to the boundary. ENG 46/1
Catch Dropped
Joe Root went for a wild slash outside the off stump but ended up edging the delivery to the first slip. Babar Azam tried to hold on to it but was unable to finish the catch and this can be a huge lifeline to the right hander! ENG 35/1
Good start for PAK
It has been a good start for Pakistan as they have taken the wicket of Jason Roy early and now, the pressure is firmly on Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root to steady the innings. ENG 28/1
Stat Attack: Jason Roy
Jason Roy departs after scoring his 3000th runs in ODI
he is the joint-2nd quickest to this landmark after Root (72 inns) and joint-2nd with Gooch (76 inns).
Roy departs for eight runs
Roy misses the ball while trying to sweep a delivery from Shadab. The ball hits the pads and the umpire raises his finger without any hesitation. Roy discusses with Bairstow and goes for a review. Replays show that the ball pitched on line and would have hit the stumps. Huge blow for England! Their explosive opener departs for eight runs.
Roy smashes Shadab for two boundaries
Roy has made his intentions clear in the first over itself. He smashes Shadab for two boundaries as England move to 8/0 in 1 over.
Pakistan post 348/8 in 50 overs
Shadab smashes Woakes for a boundary off the last ball as Pakistan post 348/8 in 50 overs. England will need to pull off the highest chase in a World Cup match to record a win in this match. They have the firepower to deliver, but the World Cup always has a different pressure for players.

Sarfaraz falls for 55

Sarfaraz scores fifty, Asif Ali out
Sarfaraz scores fifty in the most unfortunate manner for England. Root has a shy at the stumps as the ball runs away to the boundary. With those four runs, Sarfaraz brings up his fifty in 40 balls. However, in the next delivery, Ali fell to Mark Wood for 14 runs.
Wood bowls a tidy over
Wood concedes just five runs in the 45th over as Pakistan move to 297/4 in 45 overs. Pakistan rest their hopes on Sarfaraz Ahmed and Asif Ali.
Hafeez goes for 84
Hafeez looks to hit a boundary but strikes the ball straight to Woakes, who is having a great day on the field. Wood picks up his first wicket as Pakistan are at 279/4 in 42.4 overs.
Pakistan eye 350
Mohammad Hafeez and Sarfaraz Ahmed take England to 271/3 in 42 overs. They can easily surpass the 350-mark if they don’t lose wickets in clusters.
Pakistan cross 250 in 40 overs
Sarfaraz smashes Woakes for a boundary as Pakistan cross 250 in the 40th over. The skipper and Hafeez will certainly look to play as many deliveries as possible.

England miss a run out chance

Wood concedes just three runs in the 12th over as Pakistan move to 76/0. England have managed to stop the run flow, but they still need a wicket.
Spin may be the key for England. Moeen Ali has started with a tidy over, concedes just four runs. The hosts desperately need a wicket at this point. England: 73/0 in 11 overs.
Fakhar and Imam have played out the English opening overs. Now the fast and fiery Mark Wood is brought into the attack. Pakistan: 68/0 in 9.3 overs.

Pakistan start confidently
The intent is clear from the Pakistan batsmen so far. Fakhar and Imam are looking to play their strokes as often as possible.
Zaman on the charge
Archer misses his length by an inch and Zaman flicks the delivery for a boundary. The opener is looking good in the middle at the moment.
Fakhar Zaman starts aggressively
Fakhar Zaman strikes Chris Woakes for two boundaries and gets Pakistan underway aggressively. Pakistan: 9/0 in one overs.
Captains speak
Morgan: We’re gonna bowl first. Looks a good wicket and the dimensions are smaller than The Oval. So we need to look at all that. We have one change – Wood comes in for Plunkett. Reason for this is the genuine pace that he provides. He bowled well in the recent series against them. We’re always looking to improve and striving to give a perfect performance. Of course you don’t get near to it all the time but if you try to get there, you’re in a good space.
Sarfaraz: I also wanted to bowl first. Looks a good batting pitch, so we’re hoping to put runs on the board and defend. I think it’s a one-off performance (against WI) and hoping to get things right today. Yes, we batted well against them in the recent series and hopefully, that will continue.
