The wagon of cricket has now reached the Scandinavian region of Europe and it feels so good to see such countries participating in the sport. Things have changed rapidly over the past few years when it comes to following cricket in such countries. The European Cricket Series, which is a shorter format, has already become quite popular across European Union. But here we will be talking about the Central European Cup T20, as it is of importance to the nations which will be participating.

The reason we mentioned about the seriousness of this series is because the ICC European sub-regional qualifiers for the 2022 T20 World Cup comes into the picture when we are talking about the Central European Cup T20. The teams participating in the Central European Cup T20 will be exposed to competitive cricket, which is so crucial before getting to brush their shoulders with the big daddies of the gentlemen’s game.
The 2021 edition of the Central European Cup T20 has been announced and it will kickstart from May 21 and will be over by May 23. A total of 12 T20 international matches will be played over the period of three days. The participating countries are Australia, Luxembourg, Malta and the host nation, Czech Republic. This is the 7th year of the Central European Cup but it is for the first time that the tournament has achieved full T20 status. Prior to this, they were all 50 over matches and the 2020 edition of the Central European Cup was cancelled due to the pandemic caused by the deadly COVID-19 virus.
In case you weren’t aware of this, Austria are the strongest and highest ranked team among the four teams who will be a part of Central European Cup T20. Austria are currently ranked 38th and they are way ahead of Czech Republic (60th), Luxembourg (62nd) and Malta (69th). Surprisingly, Czech Republic are the defending champions of Central European Cup after they defeated Hungary in the final back in 2019. However, all four teams will play in the European Regional Qualifiers for ICC World T20 2022. Austria and Czech Republic will be in Group C, Luxembourg have found themselves in Group B and finally, Malta will be playing in Group A.
The Banks Field and the Scott Page Field will be the two venues hosting the matches. This will be the first time a T20 international match will be hosted in Prague. As a result, the two venues have been upgraded upto the T20 international standards. The fixtures were already announced on Friday and these four nations will play in the double round-robin format. Which means that each of these 6 teams will play 6 T20 international games over the period of 3 days. That is an extremely tight and rigorous schedule so to say.
These matches expected to be streamed live and Czech Cricket are trying hard to rope in a sponsor for the same. Fancode usually gets the bid on time and they have been live streaming the European Cricket Series T10 matches on their website with the help of a season pass. The value of that pass is nominal and it is unlikely to burn the pocket of the cricket fans. For the fans in India and the rest of the countries across the globe, a television schedule is unlikely to be announced. However, the host nation, Czech Republic might just get the nod for the same as the fans will be delirious.
Only Czech Republic has announced the squad for the Central European Cup T20. The rest of the teams are yet to make any sort of announcement regarding the same. Like always, Sudesh Wickramasekara, who holds the record of joint fastest T20I hundred, will be leading the Czech Republic side. Kushal Kumar Mendon has been bestowed with the duties of the vice captain of Czech republic.
