Australia beat England by 251 hurries to win the main Ashes Test at Edgbaston on Monday. Britain, set a monumental objective of 398 to win, fallen to 97-7 in the post-lunch session on the fifth and last day before being bowled out for 146. Off-spinner Nathan Lyon took 6-49 and quick bowler Pat Cummins 4-32 as Australia making the most of their first win in all configurations at Edgbaston since 2001 – the last time they won an Ashes arrangement in England. Thrashing for the home side finished their keep running of 11 progressive worldwide successes at their Birmingham ‘fortification’.
The match was an individual triumph for Australia’s Steve Smith, who in his first Test since a year boycott for his job in a ball-altering embarrassment, scored 144 and 142.
In the process the star batsman turned out to be only the fifth Australian to score two hundreds out of an Ashes Test.
His first-innings century helped guide Ashes-holders Australia to 284 after they had fell to 122-8.
Britain answered with 374, their first-innings lead of 90 based on a lady Test century from left-gave opener Rory Burns, who made 133, and fifties from commander Joe Root and bad habit skipper Ben Stokes.
Previous Australia commander Smith’s second-innings century and a lady Ashes hundred from Matthew Wade permitted visiting chief Tim Paine to proclaim on 487-7.
Australia profited by the nonattendance through damage of James Anderson, England’s untouched driving Test wicket-taker, who just sent down four first-innings overs before separating with a calf issue that implied he didn’t bowl again in the match.
The match was the first of the International Cricket Council’s new World Test Championship, with Australia’s success giving them 24.
The five-coordinate arrangement proceeds with the second Test at Lord’s beginning on August 14.
